Project nominated to AFCN Awards 2022, section “Addressing the young public with limited access to culture”.
“DANSate” (wordplay, from dans / dance and sate / villages) explores the collection of Romanian music collected by Béla Bartók, one of Eastern Europe’s most valuable composers and ethnomusicologists. This collection inspired the new album of the Imago Mundi ensemble.
The musical compositions are completed by an interdisciplinary video production – with contemporary dance by Andreea Belu / Eugen Curelici and mountain landscapes from Transylvania – signed by Florin Ghenade and Irinel Cîrlănaru.
During his extensive travels in Eastern Europe, Béla Bartók compiled an enormous collection of folk songs (by 1918 his collection included no less than 2,700 Hungarian, 3,500 Romanian and 3,000 Slovak dances and songs) which would probably would be lost if Bartók had not written them down. As they were (unaltered), some of them found their way into his compositions. In 1908, Béla Bartók wrote down dance songs from Transylvania. These are the source of “Romanian folk dances”.
“DANSate” supports artistic education for children from areas with limited access to culture: between October 10-14, 2022 we organized creative workshops – with music, video projections, movement and contemporary dance – in partnership with rural schools from Vâlcea county (Secondary Gura Văii village, Bujoreni commune, Voineasa village High School, Voineasa village High School, Muereasca de Sus village High School, Perișani village Professional School, Mălaia village High School, Mălaia village). The series of educational meetings was opened by a dance workshop, dedicated to refugee children and teenagers from Ukraine. The event took place on October 9 and was held with the support of the Community Center Zi de Bine.
